Spectacle theater – exhibition of moving paintings

Duda Éva and company

The spectacular performance that explores the life and art of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo transports the audience into an exotic dream world, building upon the rich expressive power of music, moving images, and dance. Like a peculiar guided tour, the dance scenes showcase the beauties and challenges of the female destiny, passionate love stories, impressive cultural imagery, a carnival atmosphere, and significant moments from Frida’s life. Rather than presenting Kahlo’s biography, the performance presents an independent visual theatrical vision inspired by her life journey and art, creating a dramatic yet colorful and vibrant world.

Frida Kahlo, who was born 115 years ago, has Hungarian roots on her father’s side, but she is primarily known for her connection to Mexico. Her cult is multifaceted, and people have various ways of relating to and being drawn to her: she is an ideal, an icon, whose zest for life was unparalleled, even though her life was filled with tragedies and turbulent love affairs. For many, she is a muse, as her unique and individual character continues to inspire many, whether we speak of women’s equality, art, courage, progressive ideas, or astonishing vitality.

Frida Kahlo is a well-known and popular artist in Hungary too, and this performance provides an opportunity to offer new perspectives on her life and art. This grand production allows us to immerse ourselves in the visually and emotionally rich world of her art and her country, Mexico, filled with surprises. Our goal is to approach the intellectual legacy of such a great artist with the utmost respect, preserving the most defining moments of her life and the magical power of her sometimes poignant paintings, while also translating the waves of passion and extremes of emotions into contemporary forms.
