The Hungarian engineer’s lunar rover weighed only 35 kilogrammes on the Moon

The lunar rover arrived on the Moon on Apollo 15. The rover was designed by Ferenc Pavlics, a mechanical engineer who had studied in Budapest. The vehicle was specifically designed for lunar conditions, as on Earth it would have collapsed under the weight of the astronauts. On the Moon, however, gravity is six times weaker than on Earth, so the lightweight design was perfect: the rover, which would otherwise have weighed 200 kilogrammes, “weighed” approximately 35 kilogrammes on the Moon.
